The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2023 season with a brand-new defensive coordinator.
DeMeco Ryans left the team to take a head coaching gig with the Houston Texans, leaving the 49ers to hire his replacement.
They ended up going with Steve Wilks, a coach with nearly 20 years of NFL experience.
Wilks led the 49ers to be one of the best defenses in the NFL this season, despite some fans and analysts being less than enthusiastic about the hire.
Charvarius Ward recently talked about this disparity with Jim Rome, saying, “I love Coach Wilks, everybody else hates him, the media and a lot of people hate on Coach Wilks, for some reason, but I love him.”

The general public might not like Wilks or his methods, but they cannot argue with his results.
In the first year under his leadership, the 49ers’ defense allowed the third-fewest points in the NFL during the regular season.
While they have allowed 26 points per game in their two playoff contests thus far, they have done enough to advance to the Super Bowl.
Wilks’ defense will be tasked with trying to slow down the Kansas City Chiefs in the big game, something that has proven to be a tough test in the playoffs.
The Chiefs might not have had their most dominant season this year, but when it comes to the playoffs, they are a different beast.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are a dynamic duo, and if Wilks can stop them, it’ll likely yield great results for the 49ers.
