The San Francisco 49ers finally dropped a game during the 2023 NFL season as they lost to the Cleveland Browns in Week 6.
The 49ers lost key weapons to injury during the game in Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, and without those two the team struggled to find any room to operate against the Browns’ stifling defense.
The loss marked Brock Purdy’s first in the regular season, a remarkable feat considering the teams he’s faced up to this point.
The second-year quarterback has looked like a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan’s offense, though there are still some wondering whether or not he’s just simply a by-product of the system.
There’s no doubt that Purdy’s played better than expected, but there might come a time when his relative inexperience will come back to bite San Francisco.
For that reason, Jay Gruden would rather take Kirk Cousins over Purdy if he had to pick one via 95.7 The Game.
“I’m taking Kirk. He’s got a lot more games under his belt. Always take the veteran who’s been there and done that…Brock is still a very unfinished product, got a great career ahead of him, but I’ll take the guarantee in Kirk,” Gruden said.

Cousins has been dealing with an underwhelming Minnesota Vikings team that could be out of the playoffs soon considering star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Cousins is the most popular quarterback in trade rumors, though it doesn’t sound like there’s any traction on a potential deal so far.
The Purdy versus Cousins debate is an interesting one, though at this juncture the 49ers are better off sticking with their own player.
