Shane Lowry etches his name in golf lore with historic trifecta of holes in one at Pebble Beach, Augusta National, and TPC Sawgrass
Shane Lowry’s first-round hole-in-one at Pebble Beach means the Irishman has achieved a unique piece of golfing history. Four-under for his round, Lowry produced a stunning 113-yard pitch into the iconic par-three 7th. The 2019 Open champ saw his ball bounce once, spin, and then drop perfectly into the hole for arguably the most memorable hole-in-one of his career. Lowry would then par his final two holes to finish six under for the day and two shots back of leader Russell Henley. For many, a hole-in-one on the iconic 7th is the stuff of dreams. If amateurs could hand-pick a location for an ace, Pebble Beach’s legendary short hole would be right up there.
Shane Lowry’s unique golfing history
Lowry, however, is in a unique position where his hole-in-one at Pebble Beach might not be his favourite. The Irishman also has aces on two more of golf’s most famous holes. During the final round of the 2016 Masters, Lowry made an ace at the par-three 16th. What’s more, the 37-year-old also made a hole-in-one on TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole three years ago. According to golf stats guru Justin Ray, Lowry is the first player to ace each of the holes in official tournament conditions. Ryan Moore has aces at TPC Sawgrass and Augusta National, but not on Pebble’s 7th.
Shane Lowry living the dream at Pebble Beach
After playing Cypress Point earlier in the week, Lowry is living every golfer’s dream at the moment. What’s more, he’s well-placed heading into his second round at Spyglass Hill. Lowry is currently in a six-way tie for eighth place, and a stacked leaderboard has already emerged on the Monterey Peninsula. Justin Rose and Viktor Hovland are both just one shot back of the lead, and Rory McIlroy is on the same number as Lowry.
McIlroy also made a hole-in-one on Thursday after finding the bottom of the cup on the par-three 15th at Spyglass Hill. World number one Scottie Scheffler is also in the mix on five under. Scheffler is making his first PGA Tour start of 2025 after injuring his hand whilst serving food on Christmas Day.
With Lowry’s historic trifecta of holes in one at Pebble Beach, Augusta National, and TPC Sawgrass, he has solidified his place in golf lore. Achieving such a feat requires not only incredible skill but also a touch of luck. Lowry’s ability to deliver under pressure and make the most of these iconic opportunities is a testament to his talent and dedication to the game. As the tournament unfolds, golf fans will be eagerly watching to see if Lowry can continue his remarkable performance and add to his already impressive golfing legacy.
