Spain has been struck by a new wave of catastrophic flooding, leaving towns like Cadaques in northeastern Catalonia devastated. Shocking images show dozens of cars stacked on top of one another after a river burst its banks early Friday morning, just days after deadly floods claimed over 200 lives in Valencia.
The heavy rains overnight transformed roads into torrents, sweeping away 32 vehicles and piling them near the town’s casino. Fortunately, no casualties were reported this time, but locals fear the worst if the flooding had struck during daytime. “If this torrent had come through town during the day, we would have been looking at mass casualties,” a resident posted on social media.
The recent devastation in Cadaques comes on the heels of Spain’s worst natural disaster in decades. Late October saw Valencia hit by flash floods that left hundreds dead and many still missing, prompting a visit from Spain’s King and Queen to console survivors. In both instances, relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers have turned Spanish streets into rivers of wreckage and mud.
The latest floods highlight a year of unprecedented weather events in Spain, leaving communities struggling to cope as the cleanup continues.
