As the defending Super Bowl champions, expectations were obviously high for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the 2023 NFL season.
Unsurprisingly, the Chiefs have been living up to those expectations, and after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers by a final score of 31-17, Kansas City now has a 6-1 record this year, the best in the entire AFC through the first seven weeks.
The funny thing is that the Chiefs haven’t even really been playing their best football this season, at least on the offensive side of the ball.
But that wasn’t the case on Sunday against the Chargers, as Kansas City’s offense looked more like the explosive powerhouse that it has been during the last few years.
Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan commented on Monday how the Chiefs’ victory on Sunday was one of their most impressive of the 2023 season so far, via “Get Up” on ESPN.
“This was the best offensive performance by the Chiefs all season, without question. And this is the best defense that Andy Reid has ever had in Kansas City.”

Ryan certainly is not wrong when talking about the Chiefs defense this season, as the unit is currently holding their opponents to just 1.31 points per drive, the third-best average in the NFL.
Combine this with the fact that Kansas City still has quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce on the offensive side of the ball, and it just seems unfair.
Against Los Angeles on Sunday, Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, while Kelce hauled in 12 passes for 179 yards and a score.
If the Chiefs can continue to get performances like this from their two brightest offensive stars and if their defense continues to play at a high level, Kansas City is going to feel almost unbeatable every time they head into a matchup for the rest of the season.
