It’s starting to seem like the San Francisco 49ers are finally coming back down to Earth as they’ve dropped two consecutive games after starting the 2023 NFL season 5-0.
The 49ers have lost games to the Cleveland Browns and most recently the Minnesota Vikings, two different teams that were able to contain their offense.
Brock Purdy has looked shakier without Deebo Samuel and a fully healthy Christian McCaffrey and seems to falter when the team is trailing.
San Francisco’s run game and defense have been able to give them early leads in most weeks, but with other teams starting to strike first it’s made life more difficult for Purdy who’s been forced to try to lead late-game comebacks.
To make matters worse, Kyle Shanahan announced that Purdy was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms on their flight back home.
Purdy managed to finish the game, but a video surfaced of when he took a hit to his head, via ProFootballTalk.

Purdy can be seen trying to move the chains on a quarterback sneak, but he goes over the top of the center and gets hit by one of the Minnesota defenders.
Those kinds of blows typically warrant a check from the officials and a visit to the blue tent, though the 49ers quarterback apparently didn’t show any signs of injury when the hit occurred.
However, with the emphasis on player safety in recent years, it’s probably likely that the team holds Purdy out for Week 8 and goes with Sam Darnold as their starter against the Cincinnati Bengals.
