The Atlanta Falcons have started the year differently than many analysts expected of them.
With questions at the quarterback position and among their defense, the Falcons were shaping up to be a middle-of-the-road team.
Through seven weeks of the 2023 season, the Falcons find themselves with a 4-3 record, good for first place in the NFC South.
Their defense has been much better than advertised, allowing 19 points per game, a top-ten mark in the league.
Calais Campbell recently appeared on CBS Sports Network, giving a bold statement about their defensive unit to Jim Rome.
“We could be the best defense in football this year,” Campbell confidently said.

He recognized that the Falcons’ defense has performed well all season, but there is a lot more that they can still bring to the table.
Campbell came to the Falcons in the offseason, signing a one-year deal with the team.
His veteran presence along with several other free-agent additions have made the Falcons one of the top units in the league, a major part of their success story this season.
If this defense continues on its current trajectory, Campbell’s prediction could come true.
Having marquee veterans alongside upcoming rookies can go a long way in a team’s success, both presently and in the future.
However, having a strong defense can only take a team so far.
While they are a top-ten unit on that side of the ball, the offense is only averaging 16.4 points per game, a bottom-four mark across the league.
Will the Falcons’ defense help carry this team to a postseason berth?
