Tom Brady isn’t buying into the conspiracy theories surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs and NFL referees.
As the Chiefs prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, social media has been flooded with wild accusations that officiating favors Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s squad.
But according to the five-time MVP and seven-time Super Bowl champion, it’s all nonsense.
“I think it’s just all BS. It’s just a bunch of noise,” Brady said on Fox & Friends ahead of Sunday’s showdown in New Orleans.
“These refs have very challenging jobs to do. They’ve got to make decisions in a split second, and they’re going to call what they see. These guys are some of the most professional people on the field.”
Brady, who will be analyzing the game for FOX Sports, even joked that he was lucky Twitter (now X) didn’t exist during the infamous “Tuck Rule Game” in 2001, where a controversial call helped his New England Patriots advance in the playoffs.
“I would’ve been on the wrong end of a lot of those.”
Are the Chiefs Benefiting From Questionable Calls? The Controversy Explained
The firestorm over officiating erupted after the Chiefs’ 32-29 AFC Championship win over the Buffalo Bills—a game filled with questionable decisions at critical moments.
🚨 The Claims Against the Chiefs:
- Alleged missed calls that benefited Mahomes & Co.
- Key penalties on Buffalo that helped Kansas City extend drives.
- A perception that the NFL “wants” the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Even Chiefs head coach Andy Reid admitted his team got some good fortune in that game, while Mahomes and Travis Kelce were grilled about it by reporters all week.
To make things worse, talk show host Pat McAfee added fuel to the fire by joking that Reid had a “meeting” with Super Bowl referee Ron Torbert ahead of the game.
But both the Chiefs and the NFL referees’ union have vehemently denied any bias, with the league calling the accusations “insulting.”
Brady’s Stunning U-Turn on Referees – A Change of Heart?
Brady’s strong defense of the officials is a dramatic shift from his playing days.
💥 In 2021, Brady admitted he was a “pain in the a” for referees** during his years with the Patriots and Buccaneers.
💥 Only two weeks ago, he ripped into officials for calling too many penalties during the NFC Championship Game between the Eagles and Commanders.
At the time, Brady demanded that refs “let the players play” instead of slowing down games with excessive flags.
“I always felt this as a player: Let the players play. I don’t love seeing the refs factor into too many games.”
Now, just days before the biggest game of the year, he’s siding with the refs—a stance that’s bound to raise eyebrows.
Will Brady Stick to His Guns If the Chiefs Get More ‘Lucky’ Calls?
The real test will come on Super Bowl Sunday.
- If the Chiefs get another controversial call, will Brady defend them on FOX?
- Or will he call out the officials if it benefits Mahomes and Kelce?
- Will conspiracy theorists be silenced, or will the Super Bowl only fuel the fire?
One thing is certain: If Kansas City wins its third straight Lombardi Trophy under controversial circumstances, the NFL will have a major PR problem on its hands.
And whether he admits it or not, Tom Brady will be right in the middle of the debate.
