With two straight losses to start the 2023 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings decided to make a move to address the run game, with the team making a trade with the Los Angeles Rams to acquire running back Cam Akers.
This was an unexpected move for a few different reasons, as the team parted ways with four-time Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook during the offseason and now has Alexander Mattison coming out of the backfield.
One of the biggest criticisms the Vikings received for making this trade is they should’ve addressed the defense rather than the offense, and Mattison is very similar to Akers, making the move a little strange.
In the aftermath of this week’s trade to acquire Akers from Los Angeles, Mattison was asked about the team bringing in the 24-year-old and chose to go with the professional approach, via Darren Wolfson.

Mattison made it simple in his response to the team trading for a running back by saying that if a team sees a way to get better, then they should do it, and that seems to be what they’ve done.
Along with taking the professional approach to the team bringing in a player who will take some of his carries, Mattison claims he wasn’t surprised by the move because the NFL can be unpredictable in terms of teams making moves.
In Week 3, the Vikings will try to get their first win of the season in a battle between two winless teams that haven’t lived up to expectations, with Minnesota hosting the Los Angeles Chargers.
