The Texas Rangers acquired ace Max Scherzer from the New York Mets ahead of the trade deadline to somewhat soften the blow of losing Jacob deGrom and to give the team another frontline starter for the stretch run and the postseason.
Scherzer was very solid during the regular season with the Rangers, with a 3.20 ERA in 45 innings.
Unfortunately, he suffered a teres major strain on his right shoulder area in mid-September, losing the rest of the month and the first stage of the postseason.
He returned in the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros and had a 9.45 ERA in 6.2 frames while battling rust.
He also dealt with a cut on his right thumb in recent days but took the ball on Monday for Game 3 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
After three scoreless frames, he was forced to leave the game with yet another injury: back tightness.
Given the fact there are just four games left in the season tops, his availability for the rest of the World Series is a mystery.
He had, however, potentially positive news to report after the game.
“Max Scherzer says his back is not a strain, but a spasm. Says he’s had this happen before and clear in 48-72 hours, and other times it has been worse. Won’t know which this is for a couple of days,” MLB analyst Levi Weaver tweeted.

If it was a strain, he would be automatically out for the rest of the series.
Since he is dealing with back spasms, there is a chance he could return for a potential Game 6 or 7 in Texas if the series goes that far.
Even then, it’s not a sure thing and depends, like he says, on the severity of the spasms.
There is hope, though.
