One year ago, Hideki Matsuyama stunned the golf world with a historic final round at the Genesis Invitational, delivering a record-breaking nine-under 62 to capture the title. Now, the 32-year-old Japanese star is determined to defend his crown—but there’s one more thing on his wish list: a picture with Tiger Woods.
With Woods absent from last year’s trophy ceremony due to illness, Matsuyama never got the chance to take a victory photo with the tournament host. But as he tees it up this week, he’s hoping for another victory—and another shot at that elusive photo.
“Obviously I’m looking forward to defending my title this week, and I’ve heard some rumors that Tiger might be here this Sunday, so hopefully I get that trophy and get that picture with him this week,” Matsuyama said, as reported by Korea JoongAng Daily.
Tiger Woods’ Absence Casts a Shadow Over the Tournament
Unfortunately, Matsuyama’s wish will have to wait once again.
Woods, who was originally scheduled to play in this year’s Genesis Invitational, withdrew following the passing of his mother, Kultida Woods. The 15-time major champion has understandably taken time away from the game to mourn with his family.
Though he missed the celebration last year, Matsuyama did have a special moment with Woods two months later, when the golf legend personally congratulated him.
“He gave me a big smile and congratulated me, so that kind of made it extra special, that winning at Riviera,” Matsuyama recalled.
Still, he remains determined to repeat his success—and hopefully, down the road, he’ll finally get that photo.
Matsuyama’s Disappointment Over the Venue Change
While the Genesis Invitational has always been synonymous with Riviera Country Club, this year’s event was moved to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires in Los Angeles. Matsuyama, like many others, had been looking forward to returning to Riviera, a course where he made history last year.
“Obviously before the fire, I was really looking forward to coming back to Riviera, but with the situation, a bit disappointed I wasn’t able to come back.”
Despite the change in venue, Matsuyama remains confident in his preparation and ready to embrace the challenge of defending his title.
“(However) I feel like I had really good preparation in the two days, so really looking forward to this week.”
Can Matsuyama Make History Again?
Winning back-to-back titles in a Signature Event is never easy, but Matsuyama has proven time and time again that he thrives under pressure. With his laser-sharp iron play and ability to go low on Sunday, he remains one of the most dangerous players in the field.
While the course may be different and Tiger Woods won’t be there to hand him the trophy, one thing is certain—Hideki Matsuyama is ready to fight for another Genesis Invitational title.
And if he wins? Maybe next time, that long-awaited picture with Tiger will finally happen.
