Despite winning six of their first eight games in the 2023 NFL season, something just hasn’t seemed right about the Kansas City Chiefs during the last few weeks, especially when it comes to their offense.
The Chiefs have finished with a top-five ranking in points scored per game in both of the previous two seasons, but as they head into their upcoming Week 9 matchup, they only rank 12th in the league in scoring.
Some have pointed a finger at Kansas City’s current group of wide receivers as a big reason for the team’s struggles on offense, but Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently did his best to dismiss that theory (via ProFootballTalk on Twitter).
“It’s not just a wide receiver thing, it’s all of us,” Reid said. “A week ago, we were saying how good they did. Just keep the consistency going on the offensive side is what we need to do — all the way around, not just the wide receivers.”

Luckily for Kansas City, their defense has been playing at a very high level during the team’s eight games this season.
Typically, it’s the defense that is the weaker of the two main units for the Chiefs, but this year, the performance of the defense has played a much larger role in the team’s success.
Heading into Week 9, Kansas City is only allowing 16.1 points to their opponents per game, which is currently the second-fewest allowed in the NFL.
During Reid’s tenure with the franchise (since 2013), the Chiefs defense hasn’t finished a season ranked among the top five in the league in points allowed since 2015.
It would likely make things easier for the Chiefs to get more production out of their receivers, but at 6-2, the team will likely continue to just rely on All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and the performance of their defense for as long as they can.
