Throughout their history, the Dallas Cowboys have been the home to some of the best running backs to ever play in the NFL.
Emmitt Smith is one of the legendary former Cowboys running backs, and he currently holds the league’s all-time record for career rushing yards.
Given Smith’s achievements as a rusher during his time in the NFL, he knows a thing or two when it comes to building a successful rushing attack.
Current Dallas running back Tony Pollard has fallen short of his expectations so far this season, but Smith recently shared that he doesn’t totally believe that his struggles are all due to the performance of the running back (via Up & Adams on Twitter).
“It’s [more about] the offense. It’s all about [Mike] McCarthy and the way he calls plays and how he utilizes the running game.”

It’s not surprising that Smith is siding with Pollard in this situation, being that he is a former player himself.
One could argue that coaches and play-callers can only do so much, and it’s up to the players to make the plays out on the field.
But, at the same time, players also need their coaches to put them in the best position to succeed each and every week, and that is what it seems like Smith is alluding to.
Pollard had more success last season when he was sharing touches in the backfield with Ezekiel Elliott.
But now that Elliott is gone and Pollard is getting the majority of the running back touches, he’s been struggling.
McCarthy needs to figure out a way to get Pollard back to being the successful playmaker he was in 2022, or else criticism from the outside is only going to get louder.
