The Indianapolis Colts were hoping to use the 2023 NFL season to give Anthony Richardson time to acclimate to the professional level, but the promising rookie quarterback is out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury.
In his place, Gardner Minshew has been starting under center though the organization is likely already looking toward 2024.
At 4-5, Indianapolis still has an outside shot at one of the two wild card spots, though without Richardson it feels unlikely they can make the sort of run required to get there.
However, the team can use the rest of their games to evaluate the other young offensive pieces on the roster.
The Colts have a solid stable of talent in Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, and Josh Downs.
However, it appears Indianapolis is still in the market for receiver help as they reportedly worked out Sammy Watkins via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The #Colts, who were in the market for a WR before the trade deadline, worked out veteran Sammy Watkins today, source said.

Watkins last played with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2022 NFL season and appeared in three games, recording three passes for 119 yards.
He also appeared in their postseason game where he reeled in one pass for 12 yards.
The veteran wideout has bounced around the league in recent years, so it remains to be seen how much gas he has left in the tank.
The Colts seem like they’re looking for some outside help to bolster their passing attack and stretch the field.
Watkins is a recognizable name that fans probably remember for his blow-up performances, but at this juncture of his career he’s likely nothing more than just a depth piece.
