Thomas Kingston, a close relative of Prince William, tragically died in what his wife, Lady Gabriella Kingston, described as a “sudden impulse” caused by adverse reactions to antidepressant medication. The inquest at Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court revealed no prior signs of suicidal intent, raising concerns over the side effects of prescribed drugs.
A Shocking Loss
Kingston, 45, passed away at his parents’ home in the Cotswolds, a location his wife believes underscores the unexpected nature of his actions. “The fact that he took his life at the home of his beloved parents suggests the decision was the result of a sudden impulse,” Lady Gabriella said in a heartfelt statement.
Kingston had recently been prescribed the antidepressant Citalopram after difficulties with Sertraline, another SSRI. He was also taking the sleeping aid Zopiclone. Medical experts testified that such medications can trigger suicidal actions in individuals with no prior inclinations.
Calls for Better Warnings
Dr. David Healy, who testified at the inquest, emphasized the need for stronger warnings about the risks of SSRIs. “These drugs can cause people to commit suicide who wouldn’t have otherwise,” he stated.
Lady Gabriella echoed these concerns, urging for greater awareness. “If this could happen to Tom, this could happen to anyone,” she said, calling for better communication about potential side effects.
Family’s Stance
Despite the tragedy, the Kingston family expressed no blame toward the prescribing physician. Their attorney, Martin Porter, acknowledged that the doctor acted responsibly within current guidelines but stressed the need for improved medical advice on SSRIs.
A Narrative Verdict
The coroner, Katy Skerrett, recorded a narrative verdict, reflecting the complexity of Kingston’s death. She concluded, “Mr. Kingston took his own life while suffering adverse effects of medication he had recently been prescribed.”
Kingston’s passing has not only shocked royal circles but has also reignited conversations about the potential dangers of antidepressants, leaving his family advocating for systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies.
