Another year, another crucial offseason for the Los Angeles Angels.
This has been the case for years, but the discourse used to be “trying to get Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout some help”.
Now, it is “well, let’s see if we can convince Ohtani to return.”
Ohtani is a free agent and him signing elsewhere would probably set the franchise back at least a few years, as they could enter a rebuild.
For now, however, the team is trying to go step by step and focus on what they can control at this point.
Since Ohtani won’t sign so early, Angels GM Perry Minasian was asked about two other players on the roster: Trout and Rendon.
Both have been plagued by different injuries in the last couple of seasons, but according to insider Sam Blum, they are expected to be ready to go by the time spring training rolls.
“Couple other notes from Perry Minasian today: — Trout and Rendon are expected to be healthy and with the team in ST. — He doesn’t know if he’ll replace AGM Alex Tamin. The Angels don’t have any AGM now. — Confirmed Stassi plans to return and they’re excited for it,” he tweeted.

Trout had a .858 OPS last season, but was only able to play 82 games.
Rendon, on the other had, was awful with a .678 OPS in 43 games, plus had an awful attitude at times.
Still, if they are healthy, they are excellent hitters, particularly Trout.
As for the lack of an assistant general manager, the fact that all other teams have at least one assistant GM and some have more than that should tell you all you need to know.
It’s still early in the offseason, but most of it will depend on Ohtani’s decision and on Trout’s health.
