The San Diego Padres entered the offseason with a manager in Bob Melvin.
However, both parties appeared disenchanted with each other after a season of mediocre results.
The San Francisco Giants approached the Padres with permission to talk to Melvin, they accepted, and he ended up leaving.
Now, the Padres are looking to replace Melvin and have talked to several candidates already.
MLB insider Jon Morosi states that a decision on the next Padres skipper should come within the next couple of days.
“Sources: Padres are expected to hire their new manager by the middle of this week. Mike Shildt, Ryan Flaherty, Benji Gil, and Phil Nevin are known to have interviewed. Additional candidates remain under consideration, as well,” he tweeted.

As Morosi states, there are still several unreported candidates under consideration for the role, but four of them are considered the favorites.
Two of them are internal candidates: Shildt, who is their Senior Advisor to Player Development & Major Leagues, and Flaherty, their bench coach.
Gil, a former MLB infielder, had been working with the Los Angeles Angels organization, while Nevin was the manager of the aforementioned franchise.
Of the group, Nevin and Shildt are the ones with previous managerial experience.
The Padres finished the 2023 season with an 82-80 record, but the underlying stats tell the story of a talented team that underperformed.
There is a strong foundation to contend next season, as long as the team is able to retain Juan Soto.
Even if they trade him, there is a path for them to compete for a postseason spot in 2024 with the right manager.
