Craig Counsell has been introduced as the new Chicago Cubs manager for the next five years.
When it became clear that Counsell was set to decide between the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs swooped in and gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse: five years and $40 million.
Counsell is now the highest-paid manager in baseball and will lead an exciting Cubs project, while the Brewers are left scrambling for a new skipper.
With the Cubs making things official on Monday, the Brewers posted a graphic and a message on Twitter, saying: “Thank you, Craig”.
After all, Counsell was their manager for the last nine years and went to the postseason in five of the last six seasons under his guidance.
Counsell helped put the Brewers on the map and knew how to get the best of a cheap payroll.
Fans reacted to the Brewers thanking Counsell, and some of the replies weren’t pretty.
No. Craig can get stuck in traffic forever and never make it to the stadium for all I care. No thanks here.

Only a small percentage of the replies were positive:
I don’t get the hate for the man. He finished out his contract and took the team as far as it was going to go with their type of payroll. Why stick around with a Milwaukee roster that is about to get worse.

The vast majority disapproved the post by the Brewers and are hurt by Counsell’s decision to leave.
While it’s certainly shocking that he went to a direct divisional rival, it was the one that offered him life-changing money, more than he ever made as a player.
It’s hard to blame a man for wanting to get financial security for himself and his family.
Having said this, the Brewers and their fans’ disappointment is understandable.
They were consistently good and competitive in large part because of Counsell, and now he is going to make a direct competitor better.
