The New England Patriots are coming off another tough outing.
They were only able to put up six points against the Indianapolis Colts, a team that allows 24.8, the seventh-highest mark in the league.
A head-scratching interception was the straw that broke the camel’s back, forcing HC Bill Belichick to bench Mac Jones late in the game.
However, backup Bailey Zappe didn’t fare much better, turning a fake spike into another interception, this time to seal the loss.
So, when asked about whether Mac Jones would be the starter when the Patriots come out of their Bye week to face the New York Giants, the veteran coach was noncommital (via Mike Reiss).
Question: Is Mac Jones still the team’s No. 1 quarterback?
Bill Belichick: “We have a lot of things to work on this week as a team. We’ll work through those. That is what we are going to do this week.”

Instead, Belichick said that the team needs to figure out a lot of things this week, and that’s what they’re going to do.
Jones entered the season with big question marks over his head.
The Patriots brought back Bill O’Brien to serve as his Offensive Coordinator, but that hasn’t done much to stop his worrisome regression.
To be fair, the Patriots have perhaps the worst or second-worst receiving corps in the league, and their offensive line has been mediocre at best.
But on top of all that, it’s more than evident that Jones has lost all his confidence, as it’s even showing in his mechanics.
There’s still a chance that he can figure things out and be a starter — or a good backup — at the NFL level, it just may not happen under Bill Belichick’s tutelage or at Gillette Stadium.
