Shortly after the Denver Broncos acquired his rights, Sean Payton talked a lot of trash about Nathaniel Hackett and the way he took care of business when he was in charge of the team.
He talked about doing everything differently from the previous regime and how he would turn the culture around.
That’s one of the many reasons why the Broncos didn’t hesitate to spend draft capital to get him, as everyone knew what kind of coach Payton was and that he would hold every single player accountable if they didn’t give their all on the field.
The early returns were disastrous, and it seemed like Payton was on the verge of losing the locker room, but the veteran coach was able to weather the storm and turn the ship around.
That’s why, following their big road win over the Buffalo Bills, QB Russell Wilson tipped his hat to his coach, talking about how crucial he’s been to turn the culture of the team around and how they now feel like they’re in this together and how much they believe in each other (via Zac Stevens).
Russell Wilson after the win:
“I think Coach Payton has done a great job of changing this culture and really impacting us as players. The whole coaching staff has been amazing. We’re in this thing together. We’re battling together. We’re fighting together. We believe in us”

The Broncos have now won three straight games and seem like they’re cresting at the right time, and it’s hard to think this was the same team that struggled to beat the Chicago Bears and allowed 70 points in a single game.
Props to the front office and Payton for being patient instead of blowing the roster up at the trade deadline like most teams would’ve done.
