The stock of New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has fallen precipitously since his rookie season in 2021.
Back then, he showed some real promise that he could be the team’s franchise quarterback for the post-Tom Brady era when he threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl.
But he has been a big disappointment this season, which has led to head coach Bill Belichick benching him more than once.
Belichick went with backup Bailey Zappe for the final offensive series of Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, which naturally led to the question of whether Jones will now be a backup.
Per Tom E. Curran via Dov Kleiman, not only will Jones “almost certainly” be a backup, but he will also probably be demoted to a third-string QB moving forward.
RUMORS: #Patriots QB Mac Jones will “almost certainly” be benched and will probably be demoted to 3rd-string going forward, @tomecurran says.
Curran speculated that the Patriots will elevate Will Grier and let him compete with Bailey Zappe.

While Jones completed 15 of 20 passes on Sunday, he didn’t throw a touchdown pass, and he got sacked five times while throwing an interception with just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Once New England got the ball back, that was it for Jones.
On the season, he has 10 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions as well as a passer rating of 80.2.
This has been the type of miserable season the team and its fans haven’t had to deal with in decades — New England has the worst record in the AFC at 2-8, and one has to wonder if its best bet is to sincerely enter the Caleb Williams sweepstakes at this point.
It has been such a disastrous year for the Patriots that there are rumors that the seemingly untouchable Belichick may get fired at some point.
