The Detroit Lions have done a great job of stacking young talent and revamping their roster at every single position.
However, people were shocked to see that they used a first-round pick on a running back when they were supposed to be all set in the backfield.
Dan Campbell and the front office revamped the RB room with Jahmyr Gibbs and veteran David Montgomery.
Gibbs’ upside made him an exciting prospect, but the team slowed him into action, and then an injury kept him on the shelf as well.
That’s why it was so nice to see them finally unleash their first-round pick lately.
Notably, even Montgomery wanted to get him the spotlight, as he recently revealed that the veteran willingly allowed him to get a goal-line carry against the Los Angeles Chargers so he could get a touchdown (Via Arye Pulli and Dov Kleiman).
Pretty great – #Lions rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs said that veteran RB David Montgomery let him have the goal-line TD vs the #Chargers.
“I was supposed to come out, then David came out, got me, and was like ‘Jah, do you want [the touchdown]?’”
“Props to big bro.”

That’s a great and heartwarming move by the veteran.
Some players have incentives and milestones to reach in their deals, yet Montgomery chose to take a step back and allow the first-year player to get his numbers up, gain some more confidence, and establish himself as the alpha dog on the team.
Gibbs’ dual-threat skill set makes him one of the most promising backs in the league, and he should have his hands full for the remainder of the season.
Props to Montgomery for being a good teammate and true mentor, and that’s the kind of player all teams would love to have in their locker room.
