Despite battling persistent wrist pain subsequent to his surgery last summer, Jordan Spieth chose to partake in the Congizant Classic. The seasoned golfer’s decision comes on the heels of a promising start to the new season, revealing his insatiable desire for success. Spieth confessed to setting high expectations for the current season.
His decision to join the tournament was met with humor by his close friend and fellow golfer, Rickie Fowler, during a pre-tournament press conference. Fowler had initially extended an invitation to Spieth to stay at his home but was met with a polite refusal. In response, Fowler light-heartedly remarked, “Yeah, we had a nice tent ready for him. (Laughter.) He would have been all right out back,” as reported by The Golfing Gazette.
Fowler further quipped, “Yeah, between myself and JT, who I know offered up, I think he decided to stay a bit closer. He was here on his own and obviously wasn’t necessarily planning to play this week, so I know they had plans at home, so the kids and wife are back there.”
Despite the jest, Fowler expressed his genuine pleasure at Spieth’s participation in the tournament, acknowledging the unique experience it offers. The 36-year-old golfer also expressed his hope of persuading Spieth to visit his home, primarily for their children who are close in age.
Fowler stated, “But no, it’s great to have him here. I feel like with how he plays and stuff, I feel like this golf course—obviously, he’s a great player. He can play well anywhere. But I think he’ll find it a fun challenge. I know he’s been here a while back, but it’s definitely good to have him here. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get him over to the house a few times. Our oldest is three days younger than his oldest, Sammy, and they’re very close, so she’d be excited to see Jordan.”
Thus, notwithstanding the jesting, it’s clear that Spieth’s dedication to the sport and unwavering commitment to recovery from his wrist surgery have been warmly received by his peers, with a dash of friendly ribbing thrown in for good measure.
