In a non-surprising turn of events, the Washington Commanders announced they fired Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio.
The news came on the heels of the Commanders’ 35-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys and right after allowing undrafted rookie QB Tommy DeVito to put up 31 points against them last Sunday.
The Cowboys torched the Commanders’ defense for 45 points, scoring in all kinds of ways, and winning the battle at the line of scrimmage on every single down.
Needless to say, this wasn’t shocking at all, and the fans took to Twitter to react to Ian Rapoport’s report.
I don’t get it. After trading Sweat and Young, I thought they wanted their defense to be terrible

Not surprising.
Just don’t know how you can blame the DC after you ship your two best pass rushers to other NFC teams.

And yet Ron is still employed

Get rid of your defensive best players and blame Del Rio. Nice.

scapegoat for Rivera

The Commanders also parted ways with DBs coach Brent Vieselmeyer after the loss.
Del Rio had been a part of the coaching staff since January 2020 and while the Commanders had a solid defense at times, they were also among the league’s worst at others.
As a matter of fact, Del Rio’s defenses ranked 2nd, 29th, 4th, and 32nd (this season) during his time in charge of that unit.
The Commanders rank dead last in passing yards (3,175), first downs allowed (148), and touchdowns allowed (28) this season.
They’re the second-worst team in yards allowed per attempt (7.5) and have allowed at least 30 points in seven of twelve games.
HC Ron Rivera is the most likely candidate to be in charge of defensive play-calling for the remainder of the season, given his expertise and former experience in that regard.
Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the team also parting ways with him at the end of the season.
