The Carolina Panthers are officially embarking on a head coaching search.
After initial optimism over the hire of Frank Reich, the NFL is a “what have you done for me lately?” league.
Reich wasn’t able to overcome significant organizational challenges, and due to his 1-10 record, he was recently let go.
There has already been a lot of speculation about who their next head coach will be, and how the team will go about their search.
While their owner, David Tepper did not provide any details about who they are looking for, he did talk about one key characteristic about their next head coach.
According to Adam Schefter, Tepper said, “I would like someone to be here 20, 30 years.”
Panthers’ owner David Tepper on what he’s looking for in a new head coach: “I would like someone to be here 20, 30 years. I’d like have someone say the eulogy at my funeral in 30 years. OK, maybe 40 years.”

He doesn’t seem to be looking for a short-term hire that will only be a stopgap for their next head coach.
Tepper hopes to find someone who can start a Bill Belichick-level legacy within the organization, taking the reins for several decades.
This is a rare trait in head coaches in today’s day and age, as coaches seem to be on a revolving door around the league.
If a head coach is going to stick around in Carolina for the long haul, they will have to work through the team’s current roster construction.
The team has committed to building around Bryce Young, especially since they traded away significant capital to draft him.
A new coach will need to prove to Tepper that they can work diligently with Young, outlining a plan to better him and the rest of the team.
