The Miami Marlins gave a masterclass on resource optimization this past season.
They were 84-78 with a very low payroll and virtually no offense beyond Luis Arraez and Jorge Soler, yet they were able to make the postseason for the first time since 2020.
They fell in the first round, but showed the world that a low-budget team can make the postseason if they are smart, committed, and make the right investments.
Unfortunately, the Marlins believed that another person could perform the job better than Kim Ng, and a split took place.
The Marlins hired Peter Bendix to be their president of baseball operations.
Bendix, on Friday, picked one of his assistants: it will be Gabe Kapler.
Kapler managed the San Francisco Giants until this year, when he was fired after not being able to make the postseason.
He became available for hire, but not just as a manager: it was revealed that he was seeking a front office role.
He got one with the Marlins.
“Miami Marlins have hired former big leaguer and Manager Gabe Kapler to the Front Office, per sources. He will be Assistant General Manager, under Peter Bendix,” Marlins insider Craig Mish tweeted.

It’s not the first front office position Kapler has had since retiring.
In 2014, the Los Angeles Dodgers named him director of playing development, but his stint there was short.
He then managed the Philadelphia Phillies before taking over the Giants.
Kapler has strengths and weaknesses as a manager, but knows the game and has been a player, executive, and manager.
He should be an asset to the young, inexperienced Marlins team and will try to make it a longer playoff experience for them.
