In the middle of a miserable 2-10 season, the Arizona Cardinals recently made the decision to part with veteran Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz.
It’s never an easy decision to move on from a player like Ertz, but with the emergence of second-year tight end Trey McBride this season, the Cardinals clearly felt like they could part with the veteran.
Plus, with the playoffs already out of the picture for Arizona, they’re better off getting their young players like McBride as many reps as they can for the remainder of the 2023 campaign.
On Friday, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon commented on the state of the team’s tight ends after Ertz’s recent departure, saying, “We feel really good about our room right now” (via PHNX Cardinals on Twitter).

Ertz was originally acquired by Arizona in the middle of the 2021 season when the team was in the middle of an attempt to win the NFC West title for the first time since 2015.
The veteran tight end made an impact on the Cardinals immediately in 2021, catching 56 passes for 574 yards and three touchdowns after the team traded for him.
But then, in 2022, Arizona decided to use a second-round pick to draft McBride, which caused some to wonder about Ertz’s future with the team.
Due to multiple injuries, Ertz missed a total of 12 games since the start of the 2022 season, which only led to more speculation about his future in the desert.
This all ultimately led to his recent departure from the Cardinals, and now, the veteran tight end is free to sign with any team in the NFL.
