The 2023 NFL season has been an absolute nightmare for the storied franchise of the New England Patriots, with nothing seeming to go right for Bill Belichick and company on a weekly basis.
The two main storylines for the Patriots during this forgettable season have been Belichick’s status as head coach and whether Mac Jones will finally lose his job as the team’s starting quarterback.
Even though it is still uncertain what the future holds for Belichick, as he could very well be on his way out after the season, Jones’ fate has been sealed, with the team moving forward with Bailey Zappe as their starter under center.
Usually, Belichick isn’t one to explain why he’s made a decision because he’s infamous for giving up as little information as possible, he did give some insight as to why the team has chosen to bench Jones and give Zappe a shot moving forward via NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots Coverage.
“We gave Mac the opportunity to work through his progression with the offense & obviously hadn’t had a lot of production. I thought Bailey deserved a chance to play,” Belichick said.

The reporter clearly was pushing for a better answer for why the team made the decision to make the change at quarterback and why it wasn’t made earlier in the season, considering the team has only won two games in the 2023 campaign.
In classic Belichick fashion, he didn’t give too much insight as to why the move was made so late in the season but didn’t blow off the reporter altogether as many would’ve expected him to do.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, Bailey getting the start against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday didn’t change much, as he failed to get the team in the end zone and completed only 13 of his 25 passes for 141 yards.
