The Washington Commanders entered the 2023 NFL Season with significant questions at the quarterback position.
Sam Howell was expected to compete for the job, as the team seemed unsure about his abilities.
After winning the job, Howell kept holding on to it, trying to give the Commanders confidence in him moving forward.
While it might not necessarily be reflected in the win/loss column, Howell has seemingly won over the fanbase and will seemingly be their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
With young quarterbacks, no matter how popular or talented they are, there can still be growing pains within a locker room.
This was displayed after the Commanders’ recent loss to the Miami Dolphins, where Terry McLaurin was held to zero catches.
After the game, Howell said this was “definitely not what we want to do coming into the game,” according to reporter Ben Standig.

Howell also called McLaurin the “best part of our offense, and we got to find ways to get him the football.”
He added that “three targets are not enough for your best player,” which is what McLaurin had in the loss.
When a player of McLaurin’s caliber doesn’t have a catch in a particular game, fans wonder if there is an underlying problem.
That could be a potential ideological difference between Howell and McLaurin or between him and the coaching staff.
In this instance, it seems to be a coincidence, something Howell wants to avoid.
With the Commanders on bye next week, it could be the perfect opportunity for Howell and McLaurin to get back on the same page.
