On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers not only suffered a disappointing loss to a bad Arizona Cardinals team, but they also lost quarterback Kenny Pickett to an ankle injury.
Pickett suffered the injury in the second quarter of the loss to the Cardinals, and he missed the remainder of the matchup.
On Monday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin shared an update about the status of the team’s starting quarterback.
Tomlin revealed that Pickett suffered a high ankle sprain on Sunday and that he’s already undergone surgery to help the injury heal (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter).
Steelers’ HC Mike Tomlin said QB Kenny Pickett underwent surgery on his high ankle sprain this morning and is out Thursday night vs. the Patriots.

Due to his surgery, however, Pittsburgh has already ruled Pickett out for their upcoming matchup against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
In place of Pickett, the Steelers will be rolling with Mitchell Trubisky as their starting quarterback when they take on the Patriots later this week.
After Sunday’s embarrassing loss to Arizona, Pittsburgh’s record dropped to 7-5, and they now have a 53 percent chance to make the playoffs this season, according to the New York Times’ NFL playoff simulator.
The Steelers have five games left on their 2023 schedule, and they will probably need to get a win in at least two of their final five matchups to earn a spot in the postseason this year.
Even without Pickett, New England is a team Pittsburgh should be able to defeat, and getting a victory on their home field over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16 is something the Steelers should also be able to do.
Pickett was not placed on injured reserve by Pittsburgh, so he can return to the team at any point within the next five weeks.
