Shohei Ohtani has been meeting with teams and is expected to make a decision about his future before the end of the week.
He is, after all, the most important and influential free agent in the history of baseball.
The two-time MVP winner is widely expected to get a contract in excess of $500 million, probably pushing $600 million.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are said to be the favorites at this point, but their manager Dave Roberts may have done something that could hurt their chances.
On Tuesday, Roberts conceded that the Dodgers met with Ohtani “a couple of days ago,” and that he thought the meeting “went well.”
That goes against Ohtani’s wishes, though.
He asked teams not to reveal details about his meetings with them, or he could potentially hold that against them at the time of making his decision.
Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes admitted to being surprised to see Roberts’ quotes, but wouldn’t confirm if the skipper was in any kind of trouble.
“Brandon Gomes said repeatedly he wouldn’t comment on Dave Roberts saying the Dodgers met with Shohei Ohtani. Said he can’t comment on free agents, but didn’t want to say if Roberts violated any rules in doing so. He said he was surprised when he saw the comments,” Dodgers insider Fabian Ardaya tweeted.

It’s probably nothing if Ohtani ends up signing with LA, as he is expected to do.
However, if he doesn’t, Roberts could be in big trouble, especially if its revealed that his remarks irked Ohtani and his camp.
