This season, the NFL has been making an extra effort to prevent both offensive and defensive players from initiating contact with their helmets.
As part of their efforts, the league has been handing out some pretty hefty fines to those who they believe have violated this helmet rule, and New York Jets running back Breece Hall is the latest player to be issued a substantial fine by the NFL.
Earlier this week, the league fined Hall $43,709 for using his helmet to initiate contact against an Atlanta Falcons defender in New York’s game last Sunday.
Unsurprisingly, Hall shared a response online to give his side of the story (via Breece Hall on Twitter).
“I’ll just let him dive at my knees next time I guess? Not like I tore my ACL or anything lol,” Hall said.

Hall does make a valid point with his post with the fact that the defender is allowed to dive at the running back’s legs, but the Jets playmaker isn’t allowed to prevent that from happening.
The league would likely tell Hall he is allowed to prevent a defender from taking out his legs, but he just needs to do it in a way that doesn’t begin with him initiating contact with his helmet.
The fines for this infraction definitely seem obnoxiously high, especially since Kansas City Chiefs running back Isaiah Pacheco was only fined $4,943 for punching a Green Bay Packers player in the face last week.
In Hall’s case, it seemed like he was reacting to an Atlanta player approaching him to make a tackle, and the helmet contact made by the New York running back was unintentional.
But the NFL clearly doesn’t care if the helmet contact was intentional or not.
