You don’t have to be a Kansas City Chiefs fan to feel bad about Patrick Mahomes right now.
Even though he hasn’t been around for that long, the Texas Tech product has already done more than enough to be considered one of the greatest to ever do it, and you never want to see those kinds of players failing to meet their standards.
That’s why Stephen A. Smith had no choice but to call him out on the latest edition of ESPN’s First Take.
“Patrick Mahomes may be the greatest quarterback we’ve ever seen. It’s the first time in his career I’ve seen him embarrass himself,” Smith said.
The controversial pundit praised Mahomes and stated that he’s perhaps the best quarterback of all time, but he ripped him for ’embarrassing himself’ for the first time in his career.
Notably, that had nothing to do with his performance on the field.
Mahomes actually single-handedly willed his team back into contention and rallied from a double-digit deficit.
In fact, he even connected with Travis Kelce for the would-be game-winning touchdown, which was ruled out because Kadarius Toney was caught offsides.
That call made Mahomes lose his cool, and he had to be held back and contained on the sidelines after he went at the officials and kept complaining about it.
The call was right on point; it was a blatant offsides.
Still, it showed Mahomes’ underlying frustration from all season, and it’s hard not to understand why.
He’s been playing as well as always, but he just doesn’t have any reliable pass-catcher besides Travis Kelce, and no one can win that way, not even him.
