The Detroit Tigers are slowly, and quietly, putting together a team that they hope will be competitive in 2024.
Sometimes, it’s not easy for teams that aren’t clear contenders to add elite, or at least solid, MLB-caliber players.
The Tigers haven’t made a lot of moves so far, but the ones they have made have been quality ones.
On Monday, several outlets reported that they signed left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin to bolster their bullpen.
“Tigers, LHP Andrew Chafin reportedly agree to 1-year deal with a club option for a second year, per MLB.com‘s @beckjason,” MLB tweeted.

It’s a one-year deal, and the Tigers will have the option to extend their working relationship for 2025 if they want via a club option.
Chafin is now a veteran, but could still contribute to a solid bullpen.
The 33-year-old posted a 4.73 ERA, but his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) was a much more palatable 4.01.
He also has a career 3.40 ERA and more strikeouts than innings pitched, so he should be able to help the Tigers protect late leads with his stuff and experience.
The Tigers added on-base machine Mark Canha via trade, and signed starter Kenta Maeda and now Chafin via free agency.
The hope is that they make at least another move to bolster the offense and bring in at least one additional starter.
With their young core of Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Spencer Torkelson, Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning and more, they could potentially achieve great things in 2024.
They need consistency and for the moves and additions to keep coming.
