The San Diego Padres have won eight of their last 10 games.
It was too little, too late, though.
San Diego blanked the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, on Tuesday, thanks to a brilliant start by Seth Lugo.
However, the Padres virtually ran out of time (of games, really) and their elimination number is down to one.
That means only a miracle can save them, as Talkin’ Baseball explains in a tweet.
“Padres can be eliminated today if: -They lose -The Cubs win -The Reds win -The Marlins win twice,” they tweeted.

It’s not like all those things need to happen for the Padres to be officially eliminated from playoffs contention: if just one of those scenarios take place, it’s time to think about 2024.
The Padres will play the Giants once again, the Cincinnati Reds will visit the Cleveland Guardians, and the Miami Marlins will play a doubleheader against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
The Chicago Cubs will be going up against the Atlanta Braves.
Will the Padres live another day?
It seems unlikely, but it doesn’t matter at this point.
They are virtually eliminated anyway and it’s a matter of time.
Ownership and the front office have to investigate why a team with a +94 run differential can be fourth in its division with a losing record.
As of Wednesday afternoon, San Diego is 78-80, one of the most disappointing performances by a team in the 2023 season.
They spent a fortune just to watch other clubs make a run at the World Series in the postseason.
