Nick Kyrgios, the Australian tennis sensation, has hinted at the possibility of retiring soon due to persistent injury issues. After a two-year hiatus due to a debilitating injury, the former Wimbledon finalist has struggled to regain his previous form. His return to the court in January has been marked by losses in three consecutive tournaments, failing to score a single victory in any of the singles matches.
Kyrgios’ latest setback came at Indian Wells, where he was forced to retire from his first-round match due to wrist complications. This was an emotional blow for the Australian, who had previously undergone surgery on the same wrist. The athlete had raised alarms when he prematurely ended a practice session due to pain in his right wrist.
The 29-year-old wildcard entry at Indian Wells put up a spirited fight against Botic van de Zandschulp. Despite being down 1-4 in the initial set, Kyrgios rallied to force a tiebreak and even secured a set point. Unfortunately, his injury got the better of him, and after a break down, he tearfully decided to withdraw from the match, which Van de Zandschulp was leading 7-6(7) 3-0.
The comeback trail has been challenging for Kyrgios, with losses in his opening games at the Brisbane International and Australian Open. The player, once ranked as world No. 13, has expressed his frustrations and the growing realization that he may never regain his top form. He dropped a subtle hint towards retirement, asserting that he is now a “new player.”
In a post on TikTok, Kyrgios noted, “Gotta let go of what was. You are a new person, new player now. It ain’t easy, but you have to enjoy whatever is left in this tennis journey. I’m a competitor, I always think I’m capable and I always want to play my best.”
The Australian player, who won seven titles in his career, underwent what he referred to as a “full wrist reconstruction” in 2023. He then spent several months in recovery and rehabilitation, with doctors even suggesting that he may never return to professional tennis.
Despite the setbacks and physical pain, Kyrgios appears determined to continue competing as long as he can. However, it remains uncertain when and where he will make his next appearance on the court. His decision to retire from the first round at Indian Wells and his recent hint at retirement have left many speculating about the future of his career.
