The Los Angeles Dodgers came up with a creative way to pay Shohei Ohtani his $700 million contract.
With one player making that much money, you could bet the Dodgers would not have much left to sign other players.
But, that is not the case.
Mostly because Ohtani will only be making $2 million per season for the next 10 years.
Ohtani agreed to defer $68 million per year which he will be paid from 2034-2043.
This is one of the strangest contracts in MLB history.
But, the Dodgers have to be thrilled that Ohtani agreed to it.
Now they will have plenty of money to spend on more free agents.
According to Codify, here is a visual for how the Ohtani contract will play out.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will pay Shohei Ohtani:
$2 million <— 2024
$2 million <— 2025
$2 million <— 2026
$2 million <— 2027
$2 million <— 2028
$2 million <— 2029
$2 million <— 2030
$2 million <— 2031
$2 million <— 2032

According to this breakdown, it is very likely that Ohtani will be getting paid by the Dodgers during retirement.
By the end of this contract in 2043, he will be 49 years old.
No player has ever played in MLB that long.
Ohtani does not care when he receives the money.
He accepted a contract that he felt was fair for his value, but he is willing to get paid most of the money much later.
It will be interesting to see if other players will follow in Ohtani’s footsteps with a contract structure like this.
This helps the team much more than the player on the front end, but it goes to show how much Ohtani cares about winning.
Thanks to this deal the Dodgers are far from done in the free-agent market.
