Despite Russell Henley taking home the trophy at the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational, it was the striking performance of world number four, Collin Morikawa, that truly commanded attention. Even without securing a win since 2023 on the PGA Tour, Morikawa’s astounding gameplay at Bay Hill left spectators, including fellow pro golfer Smylie Kaufman, in awe.
Morikawa, who last tasted victory at the ZOZO Championship in October 2023, looked poised to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The 28-year-old led the competition right up to the final round, even staying one under par for the day at the turn on Sunday at Bay Hill. However, a few missteps gave Russell Henley the opportunity to win the biggest title of his career.
Yet, the tournament wasn’t a total loss for Morikawa. His performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was nothing short of spectacular. According to PGA Tour statistics, Morikawa had an impressive 11-shot gain over the field throughout the week.
This remarkable feat didn’t go unnoticed. On The Smylie Show, Smylie Kaufman expressed his admiration for Morikawa’s unique iron play, which he personally observed during the third round of the competition. Kaufman was particularly impressed by Morikawa’s control with his irons, describing it as “absurd.”
Kaufman recounted a particular shot on the ninth hole, where Morikawa’s approach differed significantly from other players. Despite wind resistance and a need to land something at 185, Morikawa chose a five iron over the typical seven iron selection of younger players or the six iron option of more seasoned golfers. Morikawa’s shot landed at 185, demonstrating his exceptional ability to control distance, particularly with his long irons—an old school golf approach that sets him apart.
Part of Morikawa’s strength lies in his ability to cut the golf ball and adjust distances. His unique method of playing fades, developed under a new coach, has increased his control over hitting pin high, which Kaufman referred to as Morikawa’s “superpower.”
Even though Morikawa’s performance at Bay Hill was not crowned with a win, it was a step towards his return to top form. The PGA Tour website reported that Morikawa gained almost five shots on the field with his approach play over the four rounds, with his most remarkable display occurring on Saturday.
Morikawa’s third-round performance, where he gained more than 3.6 shots in approach play, reminded viewers of the incredible iron play that led to his two major wins in his first eight starts in the sport’s four biggest events.
Despite the disappointment of not winning, Morikawa, a two-time major champion, is undeterred. He knows what it takes to win and is likely more determined than ever to seize his next opportunity. After all, his journey in golf is far from over, and his return to top form at Bay Hill is just the beginning.
