Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made two quarterback roster decisions this week.
Not only did O’Connell switch his starting quarterback from Joshua Dobbs to Nick Mullens, but he demoted Dobbs to the No. 3 spot behind rookie Jaren Hall.
Dobbs had some good moments with the Vikings since a midseason trade from the Arizona Cardinals but was benched before the end of Minnesota’s Week 14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
That in-game decision all but sealed Dobbs’ fate as the starter, but fans were surprised to see him fall way down the Vikings’ depth chart.

That’s pretty disrespectful.
He won you guys games.
At least let him warm the bench as number two.— Garett Nelson (@garettnelson) December 14, 2023

Dobbs took the NFL by storm when he led the Vikings to a comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, just days after he joined the team from the Cardinals.
Dobbs won the the Vikings’ next game over the New Orleans Saints in Week 10, but couldn’t regain that spark in the following three games.
Minnesota lost to the Denver Broncos and then Dobbs threw four interceptions in a loss to the Chicago Bears.
The veteran quarterback couldn’t do much in Week 14, either: He completed just 10-of-23 passes for 63 yards and was sacked five times.
O’Connell went to Mullens midway through the fourth quarter, where he led the Vikings to a game-winning field goal drive with two minutes left in the game.
Dobbs enjoyed a historic rise in the league during those first two weeks with the Vikings, but there’s a reason he’s on his fifth team since 2018 (he spent time with the Cleveland Browns in 2022 but never saw game action).
And with the Vikings looking at a postseason berth, they’ll need more consistency at quarterback.
