Following his team’s last-minute loss to the Buffalo Bills last weekend, the world saw a different side of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes is typically a fiery player on the sideline during games, but in the loss to the Bills, he was furious at a call made by the officials, and at one point, he had to be held back by his teammates to avoid getting himself into some major trouble.
The Chiefs quarterback was clearly frustrated, and it likely wasn’t entirely due to the penalty that was called, but just a culmination of things not going well for the team throughout the matchup against Buffalo.
Despite his frustrations, Mahomes never publicly called any of his teammates out for any mistakes that they might have made in the game, and pointing fingers elsewhere is something the quarterback has never done during his time with the franchise.
Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was recently asked why we don’t really see Mahomes hold his teammates accountable by getting in their faces on the sidelines like some other quarterbacks around the NFL might do, and Nagy made sure to share that what Mahomes does on game day is only a small sample size of how he leads the guys in the locker room throughout each week (via Kansas City Chiefs on YouTube).
“That’s probably one of Pat’s strengths. He’s so good at being able to lead without having to show a million different ways of how he does it for three hours on game day.”
Sometimes, when people take a different approach to something, it’s viewed by outsiders as wrong, whether it works or not.
In the case of Mahomes, he’s helped lead Kansas City to two Super Bowl wins since 2019, so he must be doing something right.
