The Los Angeles Chargers made a lot of to-level changes Friday.
The team fired head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco and promoted Giff Smith to interim head coach and JoJo Wooden to interim GM.
The Chargers fired another coach as well, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter: defensive run game coordinator and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers.

This was Rodgers’ second season with the team after. he spent the previous six seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Rodgers also coached with the Denver Broncos.
Moves like these aren’t that unique after a head coach is fired, as the new interim regime likes to re-organize the coaching staff to fit his vision for however long he holds the position.
The Las Vegas Raiders, who beat the Chargers 63-21 on Thursday, did something similar when the team replaced Josh McDaniels with Antonio Pierce earlier this season.
The changes are necessary, but might not make much of a difference for the Chargers’ 2023 season.
Los Angeles sits in last place in the AFC West at 5-9 with no quarterback, limited offensive weapons, and one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
But much like Pierce did in Vegas, Smith could turn the Chargers around in the final three weeks of the regular season.
It wouldn’t be enough to turn the Chargers into a playoff contender, but a good morale boost in the locker room never hurt anybody, especially after such a tumultuous season and week.
Smith will likely want to put his stamp on the team as well in a possible pursuit of the full-time role this offseason.
