Max Scherzer is a supremely talented and accomplished pitcher.
He will likely have a spot in Cooperstown when all is said and done.
However, he is 39.
That means he doesn’t have the same durability as he used to have.
He hasn’t surpassed 200 innings since 2018.
That’s part because teams try to preserve his arm and limit his innings, and part because he has gotten a bit more injury-prone.
It’s normal for a pitcher of his age.
On Friday, it was reported that he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back.
The procedure will take a while when it comes to recovery.
He will now be out until at least midseason in 2024.
It’s obviously a blow for the Rangers rotation that already was without Jacob deGrom.
Fans reacted to Scherzer’s injury news.
Some weren’t surprised:
This man is always hurt

But most of them just wished him a speedy recovery:
Get well soon

Hope he recovers fast

The Rangers have the potential to get a healthy Scherzer – deGrom pairing at some point in the second half of the 2024 campaign.
They just need to hope two things: one, that when they come back, they are fully healthy, and two, that they remain in the race at that point so it’s all worth it.
Texas managed to win a World Series with marginal contributions from both stars in 2023, so they can do it again.
It will not be easy, though.
If the team can enjoy healthy versions of both aces at some point next year, look out.
