Despite the offensive struggles during the 2023 NFL season, the New York Jets have to feel good about their defense.
The Jets have several talented and star-level defensive players on the roster and they’ve largely been the reason why the team has managed to earn some wins despite their anemic offense.
Quinnen Williams is living up to the hype of being a top-3 pick as he’s been disruptive along the defensive line, while the linebacker duo of Quincy Williams and C.J. Mosely makes for a top-tier duo.
However, New York also employs Sauce Gardner who has a case as the best cornerback in the league right now.
Gardner is a true shutdown corner who offenses have to be careful throwing to, and he’s having another strong year in his sophomore season.
Although Gardner has yet to record an interception this year, head coach Robert Saleh isn’t very worried about it via the Jets’ official YouTube account.
“I told him that they come in bunches. As soon as he gets one, they are gonna start to flow,” Saleh said.
Gardner recorded two interceptions in his rookie season, and while he’s had a few opportunities this season they just haven’t come.
However, Saleh remains confident that Gardner will eventually snag one and he believes they’ll come in bunches.
Opposing quarterbacks haven’t targeted Gardner too much this season given his great coverage skills, so that also plays a part in his lack of picks.
While it would be nice to see the talented defensive back force a turnover, the main goal for him and the defense should continue to gather stops.
With a game against the Miami Dolphins on tap, Gardner will need to be on his A-game.
