Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is one of the top candidates for NFL MVP this season, and he and the Eagles are also playing for the top seed in the NFC as well as the top spot in the NFC East.
The next opportunity Hurts and company will have to improve on their season is Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks, but Hurts won’t be at full strength.
Hurts popped up on the Eagles’ Week 15 injury report Saturday with an undisclosed illness, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, but will reportedly still play.
Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts, added to the injury report Saturday due to illness, will play Monday night vs. the Seahawks, per source.
With Seahawks’ QB Geno Smith listed as questionable for Monday night due to his groin injury, there is a real chance that Seattle’s backup…— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) December 17, 2023
If Hurts’ illness were to somehow prevent him from playing, backup Marcus Mariota would likely step in to start for the Eagles.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case, and the Eagles will need Hurts at his best amid a two-game losing streak.
Hurts has just one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown during that stretch – both in the Week 13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers before he and the Eagles were stymied by the stout Dallas Cowboys defense in Week 14.
The Seahawks offer a much-more friendly matchup for the Eagles offense after Seattle gave up at least 28 points in each of its past three games – all of which were losses.
Seattle’s secondary also allows the 25th-most passing yards and 23rd-most passing touchdowns.
The Eagles need a pick-me-up game after their recent skid, and a win would help them keep pace with the 49ers and Cowboys in the NFC playoff race.
Playing sick is never fun, but the alternative for Philadelphia might be worse than a less-than-100-percent Hurts under center.
