The New England Patriots offense hasn’t just been bad by this season’s standards – they’ve been historically bad.
The Patriots have the worst-scoring offense in the NFL this season and have averaged just 13.0 points per game.
If that number holds for the rest of the season, New England would break a 10-year record for least points per game by a team.
The last team to average fewer than 14 points per game was the 2012 Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer.
The Patriots are the only team in the last 10 seasons to averaged fewer than 14 PPG in a season.
The last team to do so was the 2012 Chiefs the season before hiring Andy Reid.

That Chiefs team went 2-14 with Romeo Crennel as their head coach and Matt Cassel as their quarterback.
Kansas City fired Crennel after the season, hired Andy Reid that offseason and traded for then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.
That change ushered in a new age of Chiefs football where Kansas City averaged at least 22 points per game and made the playoffs in nine of 10 seasons.
The Patriots offense may be just as bad as that Chiefs team, but it’s unclear if they’ll go the same route as Kansas City and replace everyone this offseason.
Head coach Bill Belichick’s job has been questioned and quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe haven’t proven to be consistent starters in the NFL.
While Zappe scored 21 points this past week in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Patriots had failed to score double-digit points in the previous three games – all losses.
New England has four chances to better its scoring output, but it won’t be easy.
The Patriots face the Chiefs in Week 15 before games against the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets – all of which have solid defenses.
