The debate over who should win the NFL Most Valuable Player award this season might just include San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.
The 27-year-old just wrapped up a 187-yard, three-touchdown performance in Week 15 where he rushed 18 times for 115 yards and caught five receptions for 72 yards.
He leads the NFL in rushing yards and scrimmage yards and is tied with Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert for total touchdowns with 1,292 yards, 1,801 yards and 20 touchdowns, respectively.
If McCaffrey keeps up this pace, he’ll finish the year with 2,186 total yards and 24 touchdowns – numbers that would rank among the best in a single season in NFL history.
So while MVP is certainly on the table this season, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd went so far as to anoint McCaffrey as one of the best running backs of all time.
“I think he’s the most talented running back ever,” Cowherd said Monday. “… In terms of blocking and catching and making people miss and running past them … it’s as good as anything I’ve ever seen. And he’s the best player on the team.”
A moment for Christian McCaffrey…

That would be a tremendous feat given the caliber of players that existed before McCaffrey.
Hall of Famers like Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and LaDanian Tomlinson all tallied at least 18,000 scrimmage yards during their illustrious careers, while McCaffrey just eclipsed 10,000 scrimmage yards in his seventh season this year.
But if McCaffrey can continue on the pace he’s played – which includes a two-year stint where he played just 10 career games – he has a chance to reach that peak.
And maybe he’ll grab something only four other running backs have won since 2000 in an MVP trophy.
