The Pittsburgh Pirates seem determined to put a quality product on the field this season.
You can tell that by a few of the free-agent signings they have made this offseason.
The Pirates are a team that is known for not spending money in free agency.
Yet, they have recently made two moves that should help their 2024 team.
According to Jason Mackey, the Pirates are signing Andrew McCutchen to a one-year, $5 million contract.

McCutchen has always been a fan favorite in Pittsburgh.
He started his career as a Pirate, where he played his first nine MLB seasons.
During that time he made five All-Star teams and won an NL MVP award.
McCutchen proceeded to play for a few different teams before returning to Pittsburgh last season.
Now he gets another year in the black and gold in 2024.
Even at the age of 36, McCutchen was still effective last year.
He batted .256 with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.
But, where he is at his best is with plate discipline.
He walked 75 times compared to 100 strikeouts.
That type of strikeout-to-walk ratio is tough to find in MLB.
It remains to be seen how many more years McCutchen wants to play.
But, it makes sense for him to want to finish his career as a Pirate.
McCutchen now joins Martin Perez as the most recent signing for the Pirates.
While the Pirates more than likely will not be a playoff team in 2024, at least they are showing a willingness to spend money.
