Entering the 2023 NFL season, the pressure was palpable for the Los Angeles Chargers who have underwhelmed the past few seasons.
The Chargers had a star-studded roster in every phase of the game and were thought to be a playoff team, but those hopes evaporated once the team lost several key players to injury.
However, the biggest impediment to Los Angeles’ playoff hopes was former head coach Brandon Staley who clearly lost the confidence of the roster and coaching staff.
Staley was hired because of the work he did as the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator, but he flamed out when he got to run the Chargers’ sideline.
Following a blowout loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, team owner Dean Spanos decided to finally fire Staley.
While the Los Angeles job looks appealing on paper because of Justin Herbert, Kevin Clark believes that it’s actually going to be a difficult position to be in via The Ringer.
“Whoever takes that job is in for a real nightmare,” Clark said.

Clark argues that the Chargers’ salary cap issues and having Herbert puts any new head coach in a difficult spot as they are expected to deliver wins right away but with a vastly different-looking roster.
Most head coaches would love the opportunity to work with a quarterback as talented as Herbert, but there is some merit to Clark’s assertion that it could be fool’s gold.
Los Angeles is going to have to make some tough moves in the offseason, and it’ll be interesting to see who the organization chooses as their next head coach.
