Roster Strategy
The team continues its spring training approach by reshaping the roster to secure a competitive Opening Day lineup. In a recent move, the organization reassigned infielder Jonathan Ornelas and pitcher Gerson Garabito to Triple-A Round Rock. Both players impressed in limited action during spring training but ultimately fell just short of the depth required to secure a spot on the major league team.
Jonathan Ornelas Performance and Prospects
Ornelas appeared in 14 games during camp, demonstrating solid hitting abilities with a .375 batting average, a .423 on-base percentage, and a .458 slugging percentage over 24 at-bats. While his performance was punctuated by seven strikeouts and just one walk, he managed to record four RBIs and contribute two runs. At only 24 years old, he remains a promising prospect with the potential to earn another call-up if he continues to build on his current momentum at the Triple-A level.
Gerson Garabito’s Pitching Role
Garabito, a veteran reliever, featured in four games and logged 5.2 innings on the mound. He posted a 3.18 ERA with a WHIP of 0.882, registering seven strikeouts and issuing two walks while allowing two home runs on three hits. Despite showcasing his ability to generate strikeouts consistently, his propensity for allowing earned runs and home runs has limited his chances to join the major league bullpen at this time.
Looking Ahead
Both moves highlight an ongoing commitment to developing talent while relying on a strong bullpen core. The decision to designate these players to Triple-A reflects a strategic evaluation of current performance and team needs. With further refinement of their skills, each player has the opportunity to contribute to major league success later in the season.
