The job status of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been discussed often this season as his team looks the worst it’s ever been under his tenure.
He could return as the Patriots head coach, be fired and hired elsewhere, or even traded to another team looking for an experienced leader.
But, according to Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd, Belichick’s standing in the league isn’t nearly as high as it used to be despite his litany of personal and team accolades.
“Belichick, I’m told, the feeling in the league is a bit of a downer,” Cowherd said. “There’s a reason his staff is children and retreads.”

The other noticeable issue with Belichick is that his coaching tree is rife with busts.
Longtime New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was the most recent former Belichick staffer to lose a head coaching job after the Las Vegas Raiders fired him following just 25 games.
The Patriots’ 3-11 record is perhaps the biggest on-field stain for Belichick’s 24-year resume with the Patriots.
Despite his three Coach of the Year awards and six Super Bowl rings, the NFL is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately operation – and Belichick has just one winning season and one playoff appearance since quarterback Tom Brady left after the 2020 season.
So while he will likely go down as the greatest head coach of all-time, Belichick’s time at the head of a team may be coming to an end if the Patriots move on from him and if no other team wants to hire him.
